A term not used by the artists of the day, but characterised by wide ranging use of media and subject matter. The use of photography changed the approach to composition, many works being completed in the studio as distinct from impressionist who often worked outdoors. Colour was used to express structure. Cezanne  inspired a number of younger artists, especially in the Cubist and the Fauve schools.
