Dada represented an anti-rational group and artistic protest movement in Switzerland, growing out of the revulsion to horrors of the First World War in 1916. Abandoning all traditional form and to some extent the traditional materials of painters of the day, works were often collages or a collection of what ever materials were available, arranged on the canvas. Many of the Dadaists turned the unconscious for image sources, leading to Surrealism.
