Popular mostly in northern Europe, Expressionism was meant to represent just that,
feelings and emotions - an 'expression' of their inner psychological states. Many of the works were disturbing, as indeed they were created to
be. Matisse proclaimed that the whole arrangement of his pictures expressed feeling.
Figures where often distorted in order to be more effective.
